What does the devil look like?
Thanks for writing K4T and for the good question. The Bible does not give us a detailed description of Satan, but one thing we do know is that he doesn't look like the cartoon characters we see of a man in a red suit with horns and a tail and a pitchfork in his hand. Neither does he look like one of those evil looking guys in horror movies. Actually, the Bible tells us that we wouldn't recognize him if he were standing next to us. II Corinthians 11:14 states that Satan is able to transform himself into an "angel of light"--meaning that he is able to disguise his true identity so that people would accept him, should he take on human form.
We do know that he is able to take on other forms, because he appeared to Eve in the Garden of Eden in the form of a serpent. Whether he personally takes on human or animal form in his work of deceiving men, or whether he just works thru the evil angels and demons to do his work, we have no exact description of our greatest adversary.
So, if he did appear, you probably wouldn't be able to distinguish him from any other real person. Isaiah 7 and Ezekiel 14 in the Old Testament give us information about his origin as one of God's created angels (of the class of Cherubim--special angels in charge of the throne of God). His original name is Lucifer and he had a special position close to the very throne of God. His pride and desire to take the worship that belonged to God alone, led to his being judged and cast out of Heaven, along with at least one third of all the angels--those who decided to follow Satan in his rebellion.
Satan is a spirit being, just as all the angels are, and was created by God and is, therefore, under God's power and authority. Although he is very powerful, he is not like God and never can be, therefore we need not fear him. Understand him and guard against him, yes; but never fear him.
Hope this is a help to your understanding.
